Hypothyroidism
Untreated hypothyroidism increases the chances for spontaneous miscarriage, hence preconceptual as well as early pregnancy screening for hypothyroidism is advisable
Thyroxine medication is the treatment for hypothyroidism
Monthly monitoring of TSH during pregnancy and adjusting the thyroxine dose to keep TSH at optimal level is mandatory
Hyperthyroidism
Failure to gain weight, palpitation and restlessness are common presentation
Mild hyperthyroidism during first trimester of pregnancy is associated with hyperemesis gravidarum(excessive vomiting), which will improve once hyperemesis remits.
Complications: Preeclamsia, heart failure, intra uterine growth retardation, preterm birth
Treated with antithyroid medication
